GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES
Plans and administers professional work in the toxicology laboratory for the Medical Examiner; performs related duties as required.

COMPLEXITY OF DUTIES
Under general supervision, the duties involve the exercise of considerable independent judgment in directing and coordinating the toxicology laboratory and supervising professional and non-professional personnel engaged in the chemical examination of tissues and body fluids to determine the cause and circumstance of death.

TYPICAL DUTIES

1.
Directs professional and technical staff conducting chemical tests in determining cause of death.
2.
Consults with Chief Medical Examiner and his deputies regarding interpretation of toxicological reports.
3.
Directs and supervises the analysis of specimens submitted from hospitals and other agencies.
4.
Attends scientific meetings and keeps abreast of new achievements in toxicology.
5.
Surveys scientific literature and develops methods for toxicological and chemical analysis of new drugs and pharmaceutical agents.

Reviews toxicology work for completeness and accuracy.
7.
Publishes new methodology in medical publications.

8.
Testifies in court as an expert witness.
9.
Supervises the procurement of equipment and reagents necessary for laboratory functions.
10.Supervises the development of new methods and procedures to increase accuracy and precision of existing tests.

* ADA ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
1.Extensive knowledge of the principles and practices of analytical chemistry and/or pharmacology as it relates to toxicology.
2.Thorough knowledge of modern laboratory equipment, techniques, and materials.
3.Skill in the use of chemical laboratory equipment.
4.Ability to plan, assign, and supervise the work of subordinates.
5.Ability to develop methods and procedures to be followed in the analyses of a wide variety of toxic agents.
6.Ability to record, organize, analyze, and present data with scientific accuracy and thoroughness.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Training and Experience
Doctor of Medicine or Doctorate degree in Toxicology, Chemistry, or Pharmacology from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university
and
Four years of satisfactory experience in a supervisory capacity in a recognized toxicology laboratory.
or
Master's degree from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with major coursework in toxicology, chemistry or a closely allied field of study
and
Six years of satisfactory experience in a supervisory capacity in a recognized toxicology laboratory.
and
Enrollment in a Post-Master's program leading to a Doctorate degree in Toxicology, Chemistry or Pharmacology from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university.

Necessary Special Requirement
Doctorate degree must be obtained within two years of the start of employment.
