GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES
Supervises subordinate lifeguards and safeguards the lives of patrons using water facilities; performs related duties as required.

COMPLEXITY OF DUTIES
Under general supervision, the duties require the use of independent judgment in supervising and training and instructing subordinate lifeguard personnel in methods and techniques of water safety and lifesaving, and in the use of related equipment.

TYPICAL DUTIES
*1.Trains subordinate lifeguard personnel at the beginning of each swimming season; instructs subordinates in lifesaving and first aid measures and techniques, and the proper operation of lifesaving equipment; regularly conducts lifesaving drills throughout the season.
*2.Prepares time and work schedules; assigns specific tasks and work areas to subordinates.
3.Maintains time records.
*4.Supervises the care and use of all equipment available to lifeguard personnel in performing lifesaving activities; inspects equipment and work areas to insure the safety of patrons and cleanliness of water facilities.
*5.Supervises lifesaving activities in cases of accident; prepares detailed reports on accidents or drownings.
*6.Enforces rules, regulations, and ordinances pertaining to the use of water facilities.

*TYPICAL ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
1.Extensive knowledge of lifesaving methods and techniques and water safety measures.
2.Extensive knowledge of first aid techniques, including resuscitation methods and equipment.
3.Knowledge of rules, regulations, and ordinances governing the use of water facilities.
4.High level of swimming skill.
5.Ability to train and supervise subordinates.
6.Ability to respond in emergency situations effectively.
7.Ability to plan and schedule the work of subordinates.
8.Ability to maintain records and prepare accurate reports.
9.Ability to establish effective relationships with associates and the public.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Training and Experience
GRADE I - SWIMMING POOL
1.Must be at least eighteen years of age prior to appointment.
2.Must be in satisfactory medical condition attested to by a physician.
3.Must have at least 20/70 vision in one eye corrected to 20/40.
4.Four seasons of satisfactory experience as a lifeguard; at least two seasons in a supervisory capacity.

GRADE II - CALM WATER AND SWIMMING POOL
1.Must be at least eighteen years of age prior to appointment.
2.Must be in satisfactory medical condition attested to by a physician.
3.Must have at least 20/40 vision in one eye, without corrective lenses.
4.Four seasons of satisfactory experience as a lifeguard; at least three of which were as Grade II, including two years in a supervisory capacity.

GRADE III - OCEAN, CALM WATER AND SWIMMING POOL
1.Must be at least eighteen years of age prior to appointment.
2.Must be in satisfactory medical condition attested to by a physician.
3.Must have at least 20/40 vision in one eye, without corrective lenses.
4.Five seasons of satisfactory experience as a lifeguard, at least three of which were as Grade III, including two seasons in a supervisory capacity.

Necessary Special Requirement
1.Continuing possession of the appropriate grade, current, valid lifeguard certificate issued by the Nassau County Department of Health or the Nassau County Department of Parks, Recreation and Museums.
2.Continuing possession of a current, valid CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer Certificate issued by the American Red Cross or a New York State Department of Health accepted equivalent certificate.
